The British Virgin Islands are a collection of 50+ islands, cays and rocks forming the northern extremity of the Leeward Islands in the eastern Caribbean.
Located 100 kilometres (62 miles) east of Puerto Rico, these islands enjoy a balmy, subtropical climate all year around. This protected archipelago creates the perfect playground for sailors and water sports enthusiasts alike.
Each island has its own unique character; Tortola is the business, banking and cultural centre, Virgin Gorda boasts the BVI’s most prestigious private resorts and villas, Jost Van Dyke oozes Caribbean charm and the smaller out-islands feature world-famous beach bars, hotels and incredible beaches.
Getting to the British Virgin Islands
Although the BVI is not accessible by direct flights, island hopping planes and fast ferries ensure the final connection is quick and simple.
Incoming US passengers often opt to fly into the US Virgin Islands, which offer daily direct flights from most major East Coast hubs. Located less than 20 miles to the West of the BVI, the ferry journey from the USVI takes less than an hour and will land yours either in Tortola’s West End port or straight into the heart of Road Town.
European visitors may choose to fly through the nearby islands of Antigua or St. Martin. Small prop planes provide regular service flights several times a day to Tortola’s Beef Island airport and Virgin Gorda’s airstrip.
Things to do in the BVI
The British Virgin Islands is like no other destination in the world, boasting a sailor’s paradise, world-renowned watersports, stunning beaches and crystal-clear waters. There are numerous activities to enjoy during your visit to the BVI. Take in the islandís unique flora and fauna on a network on well-maintained hiking trails, or zip-lining, mountain biking and scooter tours appeal to visitors seeking more adventure.
A different beach can be visited each day, some featuring bustling beach bars and others that have been left completely untouched.
Diving, sailing, snorkelling and surfing are but a few of the water-based activities you can enjoy in the BVI all year around.
